Planter Fasciitis
Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain, affecting people of all ages. It occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of connective tissue running from the heel to the toes, becomes irritated or inflamed.
The Science of Plantar Fasciitis
The plantar fascia acts like a shock absorber for the foot, supporting the arch and distributing weight during walking, running, or standing. Overuse, repetitive stress, poor foot mechanics, or tight calf muscles can cause small tears or inflammation in this tissue. Over time, this leads to the characteristic sharp heel pain, often most noticeable first thing in the morning or after prolonged periods of standing.
Causes and Risk Factors
- High-impact activities – running, jumping, or sports that place repeated stress on the heel
- Foot mechanics – flat feet, high arches, or abnormal gait patterns
- Footwear – poorly supportive shoes or worn-out trainers
- Body weight – excess weight can increase strain on the plantar fascia
Assessment at Cambrian Chiropody
We use a comprehensive biomechanical assessment, including our Gait in Motion FootScan technology, to analyse your walking and running mechanics. This helps identify abnormal pressure points, imbalances, or inefficient movement patterns that contribute to plantar fascia strain.
Targeted Treatments
Based on your assessment, we create a tailored treatment plan, which may include:
- Phits 3D Custom Orthotics – designed from your FootScan data to support your arches, correct biomechanics, and reduce pressure on the plantar fascia
- Shockwave Therapy – stimulates tissue healing, reduces chronic pain, and encourages recovery
- Class 4 Laser Therapy – reduces inflammation, improves circulation, and accelerates soft tissue repair
- Dual Impact Relief Therapy – combining Shockwave and Laser for enhanced recovery
- Sports Massage & Rehabilitation – with our specialist Andrew Glaze , to relieve muscle tension, support soft tissue recovery, and complement podiatry treatments
Ongoing Support
We provide guidance on stretching, footwear, activity modification, and home exercises to reduce strain on the plantar fascia and prevent recurrence.
Plantar fasciitis is often linked to other lower limb issues, so our integrated approach ensures you receive a comprehensive assessment and personalised treatment plan.
